In this report from Tower Group, they examine usage of wireless handheld devices in the US insurance industry. Specifically, they are detailing two use cases: Sales and Claims. In this post, we'll look at the findings, and specifically, the benefits of mobility for these users.
On the sales side, Tower focuses on insurance product wholesaling and the benefits to this user group, which is something we have some experience in (at the time that this document was created, 2006, most, if not all of the insurance companies mobilized their wholesalers using Pyxis Mobile applications).
"The key reason is that wireless software is advancing beyond business governance applications to more revenue-intensive ones. This progress in wireless software applications provides a window into existing systems and exposes pertinent data housed in different repositories to the handheld user. In most cases, this window is simply a dashboard for client, marketing, portfolio, and reporting data in real time."
On the claims side, they look at the benefits of mobilizing not only the data, but the business process, as the adjuster spends much of the time away from an office. The elimination or minimization of paper makes their job easier, more efficient, and less costly.
"The benefits are clear—a claims adjuster using mobile devices can collect detailed information on the spot, which often improves the accuracy of data and transactions. Mobile technology streamlines claims processing, increasing productivity in the process and reducing the potential for adjudication of claims and fraudulent claims."
