This past Wednesday, the Massachusetts Technology Leadership Council (@MassTLC) hosted an intimate seminar discussing the current state of mobility and implementation tactics being used at industry-leading companies. Pyxis Mobile’s Executive Vice President of Product Management and Client Services, T.L. Neff (@tlneff), participated in the Member Roundtable: Mobile Thought Leaders Share Development Strategies on Handsets and Platforms. He was joined by Damien Balsan, Director of Business Development, Nokia; Kenneth F. Daniels, Director of Strategic Alliances, Enterprise Mobility Enablement, Samsung Telecommunications America; Alex Willis, Director of Professional Services, Research in Motion; and moderator John Tremblay, Strategy & Technology Consultant, Mobile Integrity.
In a discussion described as “lively” by tweeter @LauraRing, the group weighed in on many of the challenges of mobile app development and handset and OS proliferation. The discussion included: native application development versus a web-based solution, the developer talent pool, enterprise application development challenges, CIO barriers to platform adoption, and UI design expectations across platforms.
The panelists agreed that native applications win over web-based apps for a few reasons. When a company chooses to build a web app they face many limitations. Web apps are readable across many devices, but that means the app has to be watered down to achieve a universally displayed user interface across different screen sizes and dimensions. Native applications deliver a richer experience because they are customized for each device and can take control of a device’s attributes, such as the camera or push notifications. The panelists also confirmed what most of us already know: it is important to have cross platform support rather than being tied down to one device type or operating system. In order to build native apps with cross platform support, companies should look to application development tools such as Pyxis Mobile’s Application Studio.
Moderator John Tremblay brought up the fact that building complex applications requires highly skilled individuals, and there aren’t many programmers who are able to do it well. T.L. used this opportunity to discuss one of the huge benefits of building apps with our platform: Application Studio has a user-friendly drag and drop interface that makes building rich, native applications that run across iOS, Android, and BlackBerry devices a simple task for anyone with basic programming knowledge. There is no need to write code or start from scratch for each device because Application Studio allows users to create one application that runs natively across devices. Additionally, our solution is incredibly agile and allows for changes to be made to the application whenever the programmer wants. The user just has to log into the application from the end device for changes to manifest.
T.L. testified that security is often a main concern for enterprises shopping for a mobile solution. Apps built in Application Studio are the most secure option available because they feature five levels of security:
- Authentication requires users to log in with an ID and password
- Encryption of both data in-flight and at-rest on a device ensures that information cannot be read by outsiders
- User authorization determines the data and functionality that a user can access
- Audit trails record a user’s activities
- Anti-theft protection measures including DataGaurd, Active Cache Management, and real-time only access

Many mobile application developers are frustrated by the complexity involved in creating apps that work across all platforms. The quality of performances of these apps varies in different handsets. It’s a serious issue now which is affecting both the application developers and innocent users as well. Also reducing the security threats in handling sensitive information via apps is very important. Application developers need to find a way to make transactions safer and easier for users. Well, the whole article was very interesting. I enjoyed reading the article and also got to know new ideas. Thanks for writing the article.
